Periodontitis
Periodontitis is a serious infection of the gums and ligaments that damages soft tissue and destroys the bones that support the teeth. It is commonly known as “pyorrhoea”
Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gingivitis. That is, it occurs when there is an inflammation or infection of the gums that is not treated.
The infection spreads from the gums (or gingiva) to the ligaments and bones that support the teeth. It can cause loosening or loss of teeth.
Periodontitis is a common chronic disease, but it is largely preventable. It is generally caused by poor oral hygiene.
